La Familia! Cultural Strengths, Cultural Wounds
In this platica we disscuss both the strengths of a family-centered culture as well as past and current family wounds. In this individualistic society, the interconnectedness of Chicanx families is often devalued and mischaracterized. Valuing cultural traditions in our families can be a source of strength, pride, and also conflict. We will discuss how to heal some of these wounds while also finding ways to honor our passed down cultural strengths of famiilismo. Healthy interdependence is a cultural strength we need to build on and is one piece of our liberation & healing!
Spirituality & Mental Health
Spiritual beliefs and practices are now recognized as an important contributor to mental health and wellness. This workshop platica will highlight the role spirituality has long played in Chicanx Psychology and outline the tenants of Chicanx Psychology. The workshop will focus on spiritual wellness with strong influences from Mexica indigenous beliefs. Basic concepts will be introduced.
Living Brown, Living Well
We can Live Brown and Live Well! Lessons from Chicanx Psychology can help DECOLONIZE the ideas of “wellness” that are dominantly Eurocentric, Western, and individualistic. Chicanx Psychology emphasizes the healthy, positive cultural values and behaviors that contribute to our wellness and mental health. We will draw from knowledge of our ancestral past as well as our current wisdom.
Power of Stories: Cultural Strengths, Cultural Wounds in Creating a Wellness Altar
In this workshop platica, we will discuss ways to recognize the healing power of stories by bringing forth the wisdom and strengths in our personal and family stories to re-shape painful stories. A main aspect of the workshop will be bringing forth positive personal and cultural characteristics or strengths that have been forgotten, dormant or hidden. These strengths will be used to address current concerns to create the intention for participants’ altars (or intentional space of wellness). We borrow from a Chicana/o/x Affirmative approach and ideas from Narrative Therapy. the focus is on constructing your own wellness altar by tapping into family and cultural strengths through the process of restorying discussions.
